Attack of the baby tomatoes!

This morning The Hubs asked me, “When exactly are you planting your tomatoes?”

I batted my eyelashes then pointed at the kitchen sink and said, “Why does this bother you?”

His charming response?  “Uh yeah”

Like those dishes?  Want to take bets on whether they will still be there when I get home?

So yeah, um it’s not usually so cluttered.  I have the nine tomatoes, 1 cubanelle pepper, 2 sweet potatoes growing slips, 3 potted orchids and 1 hanging orchid.  And a bunch of dirty pancake dishes.  I had to snap this in a hurry because I had to get to work.  Next time I’ll scrub for you.  Maybe.  Meh, we’ll see.

I checked the weather forecast and it looks like the lows will be warm enough all week long that I feel confident putting them out.  I think they will get a good enough head start that if it does get chilly I can cover them.

Now where to put them?  I have had some blight issues the last two years so my raised bed space is limited.  The only bed left has a big ol’ clump of rhubarb in it and it’s backed up to the fence so I can’t get to the back side easily.  That and I think I can only fit 3 in there.

I think I’ll put my cherry tomato in a pot on the deck, so that’s 4.  I’m giving 2 to my mother in law, so that’s 6.  That leaves me with three more.  I have a long bed on the back fence that has some perennial flowers in it.  I doubled it’s length this year,  so it has plenty of room for the tomatoes.

Ignore the junk wood.  I have no excuse.  Well, yes I do, but it’s a long story.

The real question is, do I really need that many tomato plants?  No.  Do I want them, oh yes!  I have a sickness, I am addicted to tomatoes.  I like to eat them right in the garden with a sprinkle of salt.  I figure I can throw the last three back there and experiment with staking.  I usually use plain old cages.  I have been intrigued by teepees and have thought about just letting them sprawl.  I am a negligent gardener at best so the sprawling really appeals to me.

I guess we will just have to see how it goes.  I’m sure I’ll change my mind as I’m planting them.  I’m a Gemini, it’s what I do!

4. He is truly the light of my life.  I love him so.  Even when he does things like stay up late reading.
3. My other tiny orchid is blooming!  Pretty!
2.  We saw the coolest Lego sculptures when we were in Ames over the weekend.  That dragonfly is entirely made of Legos.
1. We went to the barn and saw Love Tapper, my favoritest race horse in my father in law’s stable.  Meister was smitten too.  ❤

High Five for Friday!

Wooo hooo Friday! I’m linking up again with Lauren at From My Grey Desk.   I am so looking forward to the weekend.  We are going to Des Moines to be with the Hubs at his place of employment.  He works for the horse racing industry and through him, I get my horsey fix.
I used to manage a public riding stable in Estes Park.  It was my dream job.  It was a sad day when I gave it up.  I still miss it.  sniffle. So anyways, can’t wait for the weekend so I can love on some horses and enjoy the races.  Here is my top five for the week.

5.  The Meister lost another tooth!
4.  I found Hoarders on Netflix.  I’m on season two already.  It may or may not be an obsession.
3.  I read this book.  Really good, really informative.

2.  I started this book.  Yes, I know what it’s about and yes I know it’s got the kinky kinky in it.
1.  I’m making a butterscotch brownie cake for the Hubs’ birthday.  I found it on Bakerella The Hubs is going to be 32.  Woo hoo.  I’m the older woman, so anytime he’s a little bit older I celebrate.

Weekend Update

We survived the weekend.  All that hype and the only thing we got was a heckuva lot of rain.  We ended up with three large rounds of rain.  After the first, my poor yard was saturated.  There was standing water in the landscaping rocks and in the holes Max dug shallow parts of the yard.

My newly installed rain barrel is now full.  The hubs and I had some minor disagreements as to where it should be located.  He felt the front of the house with more roof square footage was best.  I had a rain barrel at my old house in Colorado and assured him the back of the house would still provide ample amounts of water.  He may have vocalized rudely that I never listen to him and just do what I want anyways.  Whats wrong with that?  I’ll post a picture of it a little later, I have something special planned for it.  Think Star Wars.

I made a deelicious and horribly fattening side dish this weekend.  I know it’s not a new creation, I’ve seen them all over the web, but it was a hit at our house nonetheless.

You will need:
one tube of refrigerated crescents.
garlic powder
one hunk of mozzarella that’s been hanging out in the
fridge for way too long OR the cheese of your choice shredded

They are easy peasy to make.  Unroll the dough into the precut triangles.  Sprinkle with garlic powder to suit your preferences.  We used a lot.  Then sprinkle the cheese on the crescent.  Roll ’em up and bake per the instructions on the packaging.

They tasted a lot like cheesey breadsticks from Pizza Hut or Papa Johns.   The Hubs wasn’t high on them, but the kids loved them.  I may or may not have finished the hubs’ roll.
It was awesome!

5.  Easter went well.  Meister was at his dad’s house so it was just Miss Thang, The Hubs and I.  It was odd to only have one kid, but it was nice too.  She got our undivided attention for four whole days.

Chocolate at 7 am is normal, right?
 4. The Meister drew me a picture of the Decorah Eagles for my desk.  I just love it.
See the eagles back there?  Behind my phone?
3.How presh is this?  I mean, really.  How many babies do you need to hold while sleeping?
Apparently the answer is 5.  You need 5 babies to sleep.
2. An art project from school made my nerd heart sing again!  It’s the Rabbit of Caerbannog!
It has sharp pointy teeth!
1.  This book has been very engaging.  I have found many applications for my own garden that I can’t wait to try out.  If only it would stop raining!  You can buy it here.

Look at those teeth!

The kid has been losing teeth like nobodies business!
Last night his top tooth was hanging on by a measly root.
He went ten rounds with Tyson to get that grill!
I told him to just yank it out.  He wouldn’t.  He was scared.  So I gave him a napkin for grip and had him wiggle like there was no tomorrow.  That thing was still stuck!  I asked if I could try.  He didn’t want me to, he was a leetle scared.  I told him I’d give him a dollar.  That was a game changer, he was all for it after that.  I gave that tooth one solid yank and it was out.
No apples for this kid!

Painted Dresser Tutorial

Posted on
I needed something for my dining room. I had the table and chairs, but I didn’t have a sideboard or a hutch. The wall was empty. It just wasn’t right. I had seen repainted dressers all over the internet. I knew it was what I wanted to do. I looked on Craigslist. I looked at Goodwill. I looked and I looked for about two months. It was keeeling me! Finally, the day after Thanksgiving I met her. Ladies and Germs, meet Bertha!
After I bought her and loaded her into my station wagon, I texted The Hubs the above picture.  He texted back,  GOOD GOD NO WOMAN!  If the man I loved more than anything despite his total lack of taste and design sense hated it, then I knew I was good to go.
And then she sat for a while.  I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with her.  I knew I wanted her to be black, so she’d go with the rest of the room.  But what kind of black?  Pottery Barn black?  Chippy black?  Milk paint black?  Then I found this post. Bertha and I had a date!
Here she is with one coat of primer.  I loved the foam roller, it was really easy to use.  The cheap foam brushes, worked great for all the grooves and hard to roll areas.

Two coats of the black enamel/paint.  It rolled on like a dream.  I ended up with two coats on the body and three on the top.  I think the third coat added that extra smoothness.  Once she was all black, I thought she looked nice.  Pretty good, but…She needed a little somethin’ somethin’  I decided to sand down the edges and stain the wood.  I scuffed up the drawers and doors, anywhere I thought it need a little distressing.

lurve

I’m really happy with the end result.  I love the fact that I have tons of storage options.  I think I’ve only used two drawers, but I’m sure I’ll find some crap to stuff in there.  er her her her.

This week flew by way too fast.  I had the first half of the week all to my lonesome because The Meister is at his dad’s for spring break, The Hubs was working in Iowa, and Miss Thang was at her mom’s.
It was ok.
 It was AWESOMESAUCE!

So High Five for Friday!  Thanks Lauren for hosting such a great link up.

 5.  I cleaned and organized Meister’s room.  Behold the Lego bin.

I was tempted to let my OCD take over and sort by color…

I have German Butterball in the back tower and La Ratte in the front.
3. Hooray for volunteers!  These are all mini pumpkins.  Oy!
That is some crappy topsoil.
